Waste & Recycling Truck Driver (0.8FTE)
Background:
Break O’Day Council has recently taken over the kerbside recycling collection service as part of a broader review to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and deliver more reliable services to our community.
This change allows Council to better manage service delivery locally, with a backup vehicle based in Break O’Day to reduce delays and ensure consistent collection. It also means we can keep rising waste service costs down for our ratepayers.
Importantly, bringing this service in-house has created a new employment opportunity – the Recycling Truck Driver.
This role will be a key part of our outdoor team, responsible for operating Council’s waste and recycling trucks, undertaking basic maintenance, identifying contamination issues, and supporting general works when required.

The Role
This role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Council’s side-lifting waste collection trucks to deliver kerbside waste and recycling services within designated collection zones.
The Waste & Recycling Truck Driver ensures timely transport of materials to designated disposal and recycling facilities, undertakes routine maintenance of vehicles, and identifies contamination issues. The role also supports general works operations by operating various plant and equipment as required.
The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, time management, physical fitness, and a commitment to safety, environmental compliance, and teamwork. The successful applicant will hold a current Heavy Rigid (HR) licence and demonstrate experience in operating heavy vehicles and plant machinery in a municipal or similar environment.

Hours
We are seeking a reliable, safety-conscious individual with a strong work ethic and a proactive attitude, who takes pride in delivering essential community services. The ideal candidate will be physically fit, capable of working independently with minimal supervision, and have proven experience operating heavy rigid vehicles—ideally including side-lifting waste trucks.
They will demonstrate sound mechanical knowledge, good time management, and effective communication skills, with a commitment to upholding workplace safety, environmental standards, and Council’s values of teamwork, integrity, respect, and positive action.
Pay
The applicable salary will depend on the qualifications, skills and experience of the successful Applicant. The position has been classified as Municipal Worker Level 5B under the Break O’Day Council Enterprise Agreement 2018. Currently this provides for a minimum salary entry point of $67,313.56 per annum, pro rata for part time.
The council pays a superannuation contribution of 12.5% on all wages.
