Glamorgan Spring Bay Council is committed to building a prosperous, vibrant and inclusive municipality where people want to live, work and visit.  Their Works Department plays a vital role in maintaining the safety, functionality and presentation of the regions towns, roads and public spaces.

They are seeking a reliable and community‑minded Casual Works Officer to join our Bicheno team.  This role supports the construction, routine maintenance and emergency works across Council assets, helping keep the municipality safe, attractive and well‑maintained.

About the Role

Based primarily in Bicheno, this hands‑on role supports a wide range of outdoor operational tasks across the municipality.  You’ll work within a supportive team environment, contributing to the upkeep of roads, bridges, drainage, parks, reserves, cemeteries and public facilities.

Work may also occur in Swansea, Triabunna or Coles Bay depending on operational priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out construction and maintenance activities on roads, bridges and drainage infrastructure
  • Maintain parks, reserves, sports grounds, cemeteries, public toilets, shelters, street furniture and boat ramps
  • Assist with waste management and disposal of non‑household waste
  • Safely operate Council vehicles, plant, tools and equipment
  • Conduct pre‑start checks and complete required documentation
  • Establish safe worksites including traffic management, barricading and hazard controls
  • Follow Council’s safe systems of work, including SWMS, policies and procedures
  • Report hazards, incidents, equipment faults and maintenance needs promptly
  • Contribute positively to team communication, problem‑solving and continuous improvement

What they are Looking For

  • Experience in civil construction, parks and gardens, horticulture or similar outdoor work
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain plant, equipment and tools
  • Strong understanding of workplace health and safety requirements
  • Ability to follow job specifications, instructions and seek clarification when needed
  • Good communication skills and a respectful, team‑focused approach
  • Ability to work efficiently, organise tasks and maintain fitness for outdoor work

Essential Requirements

  • Current Australian driver’s licence
  • Construction Industry White Card (or willingness to obtain)
  • Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
  • Traffic management accreditation (or willingness to obtain)
  • Relevant plant and equipment competencies appropriate to the role

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Certificate III in Civil Construction, Parks & Gardens, Horticulture or related field
  • VOC for plant such as loader, roller, skid steer, excavator or backhoe
  • MR licence
  • Chainsaw certification
  • Chemical handling certification
  • Dogging certification
  • Experience with larger plant (grader, excavator, backhoe)
